What Is Pilot Insurance?
Pilot insurance is specialty aviation insurance written for licensed pilots. The product is the same as aircraft hull-and-liability insurance, but the framing emphasizes that the pilot, not just the airframe, is what underwriters price. Hours, ratings, recency, accident history, and currency all drive the rate.
A typical owned-aircraft policy combines two pieces: hull coverage (physical damage to the airframe, usually written on an agreed-value basis) and liability coverage (combined-single-limit protection for passenger injuries, ground damage, and third-party claims). Pilots who rent or fly club aircraft buy non-owned coverage instead, which fills the gap the aircraft owner's policy may leave on the operating pilot.
