How It Works

  • Priced for Your Trade Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, flooring, roofing, masonry, concrete, fencing, remodeling: each is its own rated activity, not a generic contractor bucket.
  • Certificate on Day One A certificate of insurance is issued the moment you bind, with the client or general contractor named as additional insured where the job requires it.
  • Pay for the Work You Have Annual policies for full-time crews; monthly or on-demand coverage for the trade that works a few jobs a month or subs in seasonally.
  • Add Tools, Professional, and Cyber Business equipment protection for tools on the job site, professional liability for design or advice, and cyber can bundle with the general liability policy.

What Contractor Insurance Covers

The core policy is general liability: it pays when your work injures someone or damages property that is not yours, such as a client's floor, a neighbor's fence, or a passer-by on the sidewalk, and it covers the legal defense whether or not the claim has merit. Contracts ask for it because without it, the property owner or general contractor is the one who gets sued.

Around that core you add what the trade needs: business equipment protection for tools, professional liability if you design, specify, or advise, cyber for the client data on your devices, and a business owners policy if you keep a shop, a yard, or inventory.

Mostly small repairs across many trades? Handyman insurance is rated for exactly that. Hiring? Workers' compensation is the separate policy you will need.

Annual, Monthly, or On-Demand: Which Fits?

  • Annual. Full-time contractors with steady work and standing contracts. Lowest cost per day of coverage, and the certificate stays valid all year.
  • Monthly. Seasonal trades such as landscaping, snow removal, and exterior painting, and anyone whose work runs in stretches. Coverage you can pause between seasons.
  • On-demand. Hourly or daily coverage for a single job: the subcontractor called in for a weekend, the handyman with one big install, the tradesperson testing whether a side business is worth going full-time.

A useful rule of thumb: if you are buying on-demand coverage more than a couple of times a month, price the monthly policy.

How to Buy Contractor Insurance Online

  1. Pick your exact activity. Electrical work and HVAC installation are rated separately; choose the one you actually do, or several if you do several.
  2. Read the contract for limits. Most ask for $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate. Higher limits are available up to $2M / $2M.
  3. Choose the term. Annual, monthly, or on-demand; see the section above.
  4. Add what the job needs. Tools coverage, professional liability, or an additional insured on the certificate.
  5. Bind and send the certificate. It is issued immediately; forward it to the GC or client before the start date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance does a contractor need?

General liability comes first. It is what a client, general contractor, permit office, or property manager asks to see before you start, and it pays for injury or property damage claims from your work. Depending on the trade you may add tools and equipment coverage, professional liability if you design or advise, commercial auto for the work truck, and workers' compensation once you have employees.

Can I buy coverage for a single job?

Yes. On-demand general liability runs by the hour or by the day, so a subcontractor picking up a weekend job, or a tradesperson who works a few gigs a month, can bind for exactly that window. If you work most weeks, a monthly or annual policy is usually the better fit; compare both in the quote flow.

How much does contractor insurance cost?

It depends on the trade, the duration you buy, crew size, the limits the contract requires, and where you work. A roofer and an interior painter are rated very differently. Thimble quotes online in minutes for your specific activity, so get the real number rather than a national average.

Does it cover my tools?

Not under general liability alone. Business equipment protection (inland marine) covers tools and equipment that travel with you to the job; it bundles with the GL policy and is available on annual and monthly terms.

What is a certificate of insurance, and how fast do I get one?

A certificate of insurance (COI) is the one-page proof of coverage a client or GC asks for, listing your limits and, where required, naming them as additional insured. It is issued at bind, so you can send it the same day you buy the policy.

Does this cover workers' compensation?

No. Workers' comp is a separate, state-regulated policy for employee injuries. If you have employees, in most states even one, you need it in addition to general liability. See our workers' comp comparison page for that.
