What Is Medical Air Transportation?

"in Plain English”

Medical air transportation is the use of fixed-wing airplanes and rotor-wing helicopters to transport people by air who have been hospitalized at least 150 miles or more from home. Air medical transport is also used when traveling in a ground ambulance is less effective. For instance, If someone had a critical trauma, using an air ambulance would improve their chances of survival vs. a traditional ambulance.

What is An Air Ambulance & How Do They Work?

An air ambulance is a fixed-wing airplane or a helicopter that has been customized to handle the transport of injured or sick people in a medical emergency, over long distances, or landscapes that are impractical for a traditional ground ambulance which saves time and people's lives.

How Much Does An Air Ambulance Flight Cost?

The average cost of an air ambulance flight is between $12,000 to $25,000 per flight based on an average medical transport trip of 52 miles.

When you factor in the around-the-clock availability of medical personnel and pilots along with the initial cost of the aircraft, it’s easy to see why these flights are so expensive.

The costs can also increase depending on the number and type of medical staff required to be on the flight during a medical emergency.

Best Air Ambulance Companies For Medical Transport

After reviewing several companies, we have found Medjet to be one of the best companies for air medical transportation.  Below we list out their benefits and membership costs.

Medjet - Best For International Travelers

Medjet gives travelers around the clock access to 250 air ambulances, operating out of 50 dispatch centers worldwide.

medjet air ambulance

They are currently the only program offering air medical transporting to COVID-19 patients. However, some restrictions apply, and service locations are updated regularly, so make sure to read the company's full disclaimer here.

How Does Medjet Work?

Once you meet the medical transport criteria, you are transferred by air ambulance or a commercial flight with a medical escort. You will also be received at a hospital of your choice, no questions asked!

Medjet offers a different option for older individuals, which may require you to answer some health questions.

They also offer a wide range of coverage options from international or domestic travel, student or even faculty member travel.

They offer 2 different tiers of coverage:

  • MedjetAssist Coverage: This membership plan will transport you to the hospital of your choice, in your home country, if you are hospitalized more than 150 miles from home. Your plan will kick into action regardless if it’s medically necessary or not, and there is language translation help offered as well.
  • MedjetHorizon Coverage: Think of this plan as an upgrade from the MedjetAssist coverage. Along with medical transportation, it provides travel security and crisis response support.

How Much Does A Medjet Membership Cost?

The Membership programs for Medjet are actually pretty affordable.  A yearly membership for an individual is $295 and for a family, membership costs $399 but covers a spouse and up to 5 children.  However, you can receive additional discounts if you purchase more than one year of coverage at a time. Also, keep in mind that the per-day cost is much higher than the annual plan. 8-days of coverage will cost you $199 compared to the 30-day option of $385.

What Are The Different Types Of Air Ambulances?

The two different types of air ambulances used for medical transport are fixed-wing airplanes and helicopters. Traditionally helicopters are used for more short-range, trauma-related flights when time is crucial.  Fixed-wing airplanes are used for long-range flights over 100 miles or more. These aircraft can be managed by hospitals, private companies, or even state emergency management systems.

Medical Transport Plane

medical transport plane is specially equipped for the medical transportation of patients that require emergency medical care and a fast and safe way to transport people, usually long distances of 100 miles or more.

If a patient is too sick or weak to deal with a commercial flight, then medical plane transport would be their best option.

Air Ambulance Helicopter

An air ambulance helicopter is designed for the medical transportation of patients that require time sensitive emergency medical care.

Someone who needs a short range-flight should also consider a helicopter for medical transport since these aircraft have state of the art medical equipment onboard.

How Much Does An Air Ambulance Membership Cost?

The average cost of an air ambulance membership is between $85 per year up to $400 per year.  It all depends on the types of benefits you choose.  Individual plans cost less than Family plans and International plans will cost more than domestic plans.

Your rates can even change based on how long you need the coverage for.  Short-term plans or paying  on a "per-day" basis can be very expensive compared to just purchasing a 30 day policy.

Does Health Insurance Cover An Air Ambulance Flight?

Health Insurance usually will only cover an air ambulance flight if it is considered medically necessary. That is, of course, if your health insurance policy even covers it at all.

For example, my current health insurance policy states Emergency Transportation/Ambulance (Air or Ground)* is covered at 20% Coinsurance after my deductible. The * means that prior authorization may be required.

Basically, as long as everything was approved and medically necessary, my health insurance company would cover 80% of the bill for me.

However, I would still be responsible for 20% of the bill which can easily turn into tens of thousands of dollars.  This makes air ambulance coverage a no-brainer for travelers.
